The Cannon Shot Ceremony at 9:00 p.m, a journey to the history and tradition of Havana nights.

The Gunnery of the 9:00 pm Ceremony is an older nocturnal tradition of Havana. It dates from the time when the city was surrounded by the wall, of which several sections are still preserved. The doors of the wall opened at 4:30 a.m. and closed at 8:00 p.m. and the cannon was the signal for the citizens to announce that the doors were about to be opened or closed.

Even after the wall disappeared, the tradition was maintained, although only with the shooting of the night that took place at 9:00 p.m. During the Second World War this shot was replaced by a siren, returning years later the traditional cannon shot of 9:00 p.m., with which generations of Habaneros and countless visitors have adjusted their watches and continue to do so every night.

At the present time the ceremony is performed by a total of seven young men who fulfill their Military Service as soldiers of the battalion of ceremonies of the La Cabaña fortress. It lasts approximately 30 minutes. And the gun that is fired is named "Caudillo". This tradition, together with the emblematic Morro-Cabaña Fortress, forms part of the declaration of Havana as a Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
