Day 1: Welcome to Cuba

  • Welcome.
    On arrival in Havana, you will be welcomed by our guide Aslam Ibrahim Castellón, well-known nature photographer and a passionate connoisseur of Cuban birds. Author of the recently published book Endemic Birds of Cuba: A Comprehensive Field Guide. Where will have the opportunity to chat with Nils familiarly on different topics related to Cuban biodiversity and particularly, its birds.
     

  • Transfer to Viñales (2 Hours)
    An area of exceptional landscape values, cultivated land of the famous Cuban tobacco and beautiful valleys formed by mountainous formations known as "Mogotes" that confer a unique character on the world. In the evening, after dinner, we will visit the house of the famous naturalist and scientific illustrator Nils Navarro.
     

  • Check-in Casa Particular Viñales.
     

  • Night: Visit the house of Nils Navarro
    Famous naturalist and scientific illustrator. Author of the recently published book Endemic Birds of Cuba: A Comprehensive Field Guide. Where will have the opportunity to chat with Nils familiarly on different topics related to Cuban biodiversity and particularly, their birds.

 

Day 2: Maravillas de Viñales

  • Breakfast.
     

  • Departure to the trail "Maravillas de Viñales".
    An area rich in endemic birds such as the Cuban Tody, Cuban Trogon, Cuban Solitaire, Cuban Grassquit, Cuban Bullfinch, Yellow-headed Warbler and Cuban Green Woodpecker. And many other resident species such as the Great-Lizzard Cuckoo, Red-legged Honeycreeper, Cuban Emerald and Olive-capped Warbler. And winter migratory as diverse species of Warblers, Tanagers, and Orioles. In addition to the possibility of observing and photographing various species of molluscs and reptiles endemic to Cuba, like Anolis vermiculatus, the only aquatic habitat lizard in the Caribbean stands out.
     

  • Lunch at a local restaurant.
    Located on a farm where you can enjoy varied dishes typical of traditional Cuban cuisine.
     

  • Birdwatching session at La Costanera
    Pine forests near Viñales where it is possible to find the elusive Gundlach´s Hawk, an endangered endemic and the Olive-capped Warbler.
     

  • Free night.
    Optional: Walking through this very picturesque town and enjoy the atmosphere and music coming from different restaurants and bars, mix your self with the locals. 

     

Day 3: The land of the best cigars in the world.

  • Breakfast.
     

  • Through the Valley of Viñales.
    Visit the valley for morning birding session combined with a horse ride.
     

  • Visit one Vega (Tobacco Farm)
    To know about the process of the cultivation of Tobacco, drying, fermentation and final preparation of Tobacco leaves (optional: testing of one cigar made in this vega).
     

  • Lunch at a local restaurant.
     

  • Transfer to Zapata Swamp. (5 Hours)
    Cienaga de Zapata (Zapata Swamp) is considered one of the best bird watching areas in Cuba, with one of the highest concentrations of endemics in the entire country. This is an excellent opportunity to be in touch with the native flora and fauna of Cuba.
     

  • Check-in Casa Particular Playa Larga.
     

  • Night.
    Meeting to clarify details and analyze the objectives achieved.

     

Day 4: Zapata Swamp

  • Breakfast
     

  • Visiting Santo Tomas.
    Area of forests and grasslands of the swamp. The habitat of two of the most restricted bird species in Cuba, the Zapata Wren and Zapata Sparrow. In search of which we will enter through the channel "La Cocodrila" in boats driven by local farmers. Having the possibility of observing and photographing also different endemic species such as the Red-shouldered Blackbird, Cuban Pygmy Owl, Cuban Trogon, Cuban Tody, Cuban Blackbird, Yellow-headed Warbler and the Cuban Green Woodpecker. As well as Cuban residents such as the Cuban Crow, Western Spindalis, Scaly-napped Pigeon, Great-Lizzard Cuckoo and numerous resident and migratory species
     

  • Lunch at a local restaurant.
     

  • Visit the house of Bernabé and Juanita.
    A couple of peasants who live in the town of Pálpite and who have become famous for keeping a garden in the yard of their house where many Bee Hummingbirds and other endemic species such as the Cuban Oriole, Cuban Blackbird, and Cuban Green Woodpecker. And many other residents and migrants who come regularly.
     

  • Visiting Soplillar.
    Area of forests and savannas. One of the sites with better possibilities to observe the rare Fernandina´s Flicker, endemic to Cuba. Having the possibility of observing and photographing other endemic species such as the Cuban Parakeet, Cuban Pygmy Owl, Cuban Trogon, Cuban Tody, Cuban Blackbird, Yellow-headed Warbler and the Cuban Green Woodpecker. As well as Cuban residents such as Cuban Parrot, Cuban Crow, Western Spindalis, Great-Lizzard Cuckoo, and numerous resident and migratory species.
     

  • Night.
    Brief departure (walking) to the neighbourhood of Caletón in Playa Larga with the objective of observing, if possible, the Stygian Owl (Asio stygius) in the vicinity of the beach. A highly elusive bird and always interesting to observe.

     

Day 5: From Salinas de Brito to Los Hondones.

  • Breakfast
     

  • Visiting the "Salinas de Brito" trail.
    A long but very interesting route that begins with an extensive area of coastal forests and then through a large area of mangroves and low lagoons with an impressive variety of waterfowl. Having the possibility of observing and photographing endemics such as the Cuban Black Hawk, Cuban Trogon and Cuban Tody. And resident species such as the Osprey, Cuban Parrot, Reddish Egret in its two coloured morphs, as well as all the other species of herons reported for Cuba. In addition to terns, gulls, sandpipers, flamingos, Wood Storks, ducks of different species, White Ibis, White Pelicans, and Brown Pelicans.

  • The Fish Cave (30 Min)
    A saltwater “cenote” of incredible transparency and 77 meters deep. In its surroundings, it is possible to photograph very close and with an excellent light the beautiful Blue-headed Quail Dove, one of the most striking endemics of Cuba. As well as many other endemic and numerous resident and migratory birds.
     

  • Los Hondones
    Area of forests with the possibility of observing and photographing endemics such as the Gray-fronted Quail Dove, Cuban Parakeet, Cuban Pygmy Owl, Cuban Nightjar, Cuban Trogon, Cuban Tody, Cuban Blackbird, Yellow-headed Warbler, Cuban Vireo, Cuban Oriole and the Cuban Green Woodpecker. As well as Cuban residents such as the Key West Quail Dove, Ruddy Quail Dove, Cuban Parrot, Cuban Crow, Western Spindalis, Great-Lizzard Cuckoo, and numerous resident and migratory species.

Day 6: Cienfuegos

  • Breakfast
     

  • Visiting the refuge of Fauna Bermejas.
    Considered one of the best bird watching areas in Cuba, with one of the highest concentrations of endemics in the entire country. Where you will have the opportunity to make excellent photos of the Bee Hummingbird, the smallest bird in the world. It is an area of forests where you can observe and photograph endemics such as the Gray-fronted Quail Dove, Gray-fronted Quail Dove, Cuban Parakeet, Red-shouldered Blackbird, Bare-legged Owl, Fernandina´s Flicker, Cuban Pygmy Owl, Cuban Trogon, Cuban Tody, Cuban Blackbird, Yellow-headed Warbler, Cuban Green Woodpecker, Cuban Vireo, Cuban Oriole. As well as Caribbean endemics such as Cuban Parrot, Cuban Crow, Western Spindalis, Great-Lizzard Cuckoo, Western Spindalis, Loggerhead Kingbird, Cuban Pewee, La Sagra Flycatcher, Greater Antillean Grackle, Zenaida Dove and numerous migratory species that use this forest as a winter refuge.

  • City Tour Cienfuegos. (2 hours)
    (Cultural World Heritage Site), walking in the Cienfuegos boulevard, visit to the House of Rum and Tabaco, Union Hotel arriving to the foundation area the Jose Martí square, the oldest part in the city with a view of the main buildings, the Town Hall, the Cathedral, Tomas Terry theater, Ferrer Palace, The Arc of the Workers. View Details

    Optional: Walking through Cienfuegos Prado and Malecón to enjoy the night breeze coming from the ocean and mix your self with the locals. 

     

Day 7: Botanical Garden - Trinidad

  • Botanical Garden
    Founded more than a century ago by Harvard University, is in itself the oldest botanical garden in Cuba. An excellent place with lots of birds, and that offers great possibilities to observe and photograph the Gundlach´s Hawk and Stygian Owl. Two birds always hard to find.
     

  • Transfer to Cienfuegos(1:30 Hours)
    A city with exceptional characteristics in Cuba. It keeps intact all the characteristics of its foundation more than 500 years ago. On the way, we will make several stops to observe endemics such as the Cuban Gnatcatcher. And they will be able to find the only known area of hybridization of two endemic species that were considered geographically isolated, the Yellow-headed Warbler and Oriente Warbler. Being able to observe both hybrids and Oriente Warbler. All this is a recent discovery in which we are still working on a scientific investigation.
     

  •  Stop at farmer house for degustation of exotic tropical fruits. (15 minutes).
     

  • Lunch at a local restaurant.
     

  • City tour Trinidad. (2 hour)
    One of the first villages founded by the Spanish in the early sixteenth century declared as UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. Visit the Parish Church of the Holy Trinity, with its luxurious altar decorated with precious wood and images of 300 years ago; Plaza Mayor and the Temple House of Yemayá. Visit the Trinidad´s Bodeguita del Medio and bar La Canchánchara to enjoy the traditional cocktail of the same name. View Details
